/ “Jump the gun” 🚀

Meaning: To start or take action too soon, often before a signal or cue is given.

Origin

The phrase originated from sports, particularly shooting events such as archery and rifle competitions. In these events, the gun was typically loaded and primed to be fired at a specific signal, known as “firing”. If an athlete were to fire their own gun too early, before hearing the “firing” signal, it would be considered a foul and they would not score points.

Real-Time Example

Imagine you’re attending a live music concert and the lead singer announces that it’s time for the main set. However, as soon as they finish speaking, the lead guitarist starts playing an energetic riff on his guitar. A fellow music enthusiast, excited by the start of the song, exclaims:

“Jump the gun!” they shout to their friend.
